The Bradley Soccer program entered a new era in 2003 when the Braves opened their new home, Shea Stadium.  Located less than a mile from the Bradley University campus, Shea Stadium, formerly Meinen Field, served as the home to Bradley Baseball from 1970 through 2002, but now serves as one of the finest soccer-specific college venues in the Midwest.

Upon the completion of the O’Brien Field baseball stadium in 2002, Meinen Field became the primary target for a new Bradley Soccer facility.

The conversion of the former baseball complex into a soccer stadium began in October 2002 and the name was officially changed to Shea Stadium Oct. 25, 2002 in honor of the lead gift to the conversion project made by BU alumnus and local businessman Tim Shea.

The soccer field runs from the old home plate area down the right field line with the team benches and an on-field press box located on the west side of the field. In order to accommodate the soccer field’s dimensions (118 yards x 73 yards), the permanent seating from the home plate area and running down the left field line was removed and replaced by a grass berm.  Both of the baseball dugouts were filled in, the light towers rearranged, the outfield wall removed and the right field picnic areas replaced with a combination of permanent seating and a grass berm.

Additionally, the old baseball clubhouse located behind the left field wall was refurbished and converted into one of the finest locker room facilities in the nation for both the Braves and their visiting teams.  The former baseball press box has been converted into the “President's Suite” and a new, two-story complex was built at midfield on the west side to accommodate a new press room and two VIP suites, while providing sheltered team bench areas.

The facility officially opened Aug. 29-30, 2003 when the Braves won the seventh annual Holiday Inn City Centre Classic en route to a first-year record of 10-2-1 at Shea Stadium.  In its first 10 seasons, Bradley boasts a 67-32-11 (.659) home record and has attracted 41 crowds in excess of 1,000 to Shea Stadium.

While the Braves enjoy playing in front of large crowds, they also benefit from playing on one of the finest surfaces in college soccer.  Bradley University invested nearly $500,000 in a new drainage system and playing surface at Shea Stadium in 2005 and planted a Midwestern strain of Bermuda grass during the summer of 2012.
