MARTIN, Tenn. — Bradley’s baseball team got its first win of the season as the Braves by split Sunday’s doubleheader at Tennessee-Martin (1-4). Bradley (1-3) won the first game 14-8, while Tennessee-Martin took the nightcap, 3-2.
In the opener, senior right-hander, Michael Christl (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley), surrendered three earned runs in four innings of work, while striking out four and walking three batters. Freshman Brad Altbach (Northbrook, Ill. Glenbrook North) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn his first collegiate win. Offensively, the Braves were led by seniors Brad Jones (Potomac, Md./Landon School) and Ryan Curry (Downers Grove, Ill./South) and sophomore Dan Brewer (Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township) each getting three hits. Both Brewer and Curry doubled and a homered in the first game. Senior third baseman Paul Rice (Beardstown, Ill./Beardstown) added two hits of his own, including a double.
In the second game, junior college transfer Jon Goebel (Dorsey, Ill./Edwardsville) surrendered three runs and seven hits over five innings. Jones and junior Ryan Eigsti (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) led the Braves offensively with two hits each.
Tied at 2-2 going to the bottom of the sixth, Lance Renton walked with the bases loaded, giving the Skyhawks a 3-2 advantage. Chad Cameron closed the door by striking out the side, earning the save.
Bradley will be back in action next Saturday as it heads to Jonesboro, Ark. to take on Arkansas State in a three game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon
