PEORIA, Ill. — Western Illinois junior forward Martin Browne, Jr. took a pass in the box from junior teammate Darryl Odom and beat Bradley sophomore goalkeeper Drew Van Kampen (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley H.S.) with a shot from inside the box in the 95th minute, giving the visiting Leathernecks a 1-0 overtime victory over #17 Bradley at Shea Stadium, Friday night.

The goal, Browne’s second of the season, came in the fifth minute of the first overtime session on a two-on-one break. It was the fourth shot on goal of the night for Western Illinois, who were outshot by the Braves 14-13 for the contest.

The Braves controlled play for most of the first half, putting two shots on goal against Western Illinois goalkeeper Stephen Paterson. The Leatherneck keeper earned his second victory of the season Friday night, making two saves to notch his 12th career shutout. Bradley’s two best opportunities of the game came early, as sophomore Paul Tracy (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley H.S.) put a shot on goal in the 11th minute and junior Justin Bigelow’s (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb H.S.) header in the 30th minute was stopped by Paterson.

The Bradley defense, anchored by juniors Grant Campbell (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) and Travis English (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills H.S.) turned away several attacks by the Leathernecks during the second half to force the overtime period. The Braves successfully defended seven WIU corner kicks and multiple free kicks from just outside the box throughout the contest.

The defeat snaps a five-game win streak for Bradley at Shea Stadium. The Leathernecks have now won two games in a row at Shea Stadium after the Braves won the first two games between the two schools at the former baseball facility.

The Braves have less than 48 hours to rest before returning to the pitch at Shea Stadium to host Northern Illinois Sunday at 1 p.m.
